Maintaining the HVAC Air Filter and Why It’s Necessary

How long has it been since  you checked your air conditioner filter? As a general rule, you should examine it each month and take the appropriate steps when it is dirty. We’ll share details about the different types of AC filters, why they work better with regular upkeep and detailed instructions on how to wash reusable filters effectively.

Kinds of AC Filters

Your filter design affects indoor air quality, airflow efficiency and whether you can wash or replace it when it becomes dirty. Here’s an overview of some of the most common designs:

  • Disposable filters are commonly made with fiberglass along with a paper frame. These filters are designed for short-term use and should be swapped out every 30 to 90 days. They are usually low cost and easy to replace but not very environmentally friendly since they need to be thrown out.
  • Reusable filters have stronger frame materials like aluminum or plastic. These filters can be rinsed out and reused several times, often lasting many years if maintained properly. They are more environmentally friendly and cost effective in the long run. However, cleaning them takes additional time and effort than simply swapping out a disposable model.
  • Electrostatic filters use static electricity to capture pollutants effectively while ensuring airflow. These can be both disposable or reusable. Reusable electrostatic filters will need regular upkeep to maintain their effectiveness.
  • HEPA filters, or high-efficiency particulate air filters, are the most effective filters for residential needs, capturing 99.97% of airborne particles down to 0.3 microns. The bulk of HEPA filters are disposable, but they last for up to 12 months before requiring replacement. While they provide superior filtration, they are costlier and aren’t always compatible with all HVAC systems.

Why Clean or Replace the AC Filter? 4 Reasons Why

It’s a simple chore to overlook, but cleaning or replacing your AC filter is crucial for a few reasons:

  1. Improved air quality: A clean filter is more effective at trapping dust, pollen, pet dander and other contaminants, keeping your indoor air fresher and contamination free. This kind of full spectrum comfort is particularly crucial for people with allergies, asthma or other health issues.
  • Less energy waste: If you never clean or swap out the filter, the dust and debris caught inside it forces the AC to work even harder. A fresh filter preserves airflow, reducing the unit’s workload and helping to manage your energy bills.
  • Longer life span: Regularly maintaining the filter prevents the system from overheating, lowers wear and tear, and can even extend your unit’s lifespan!
  • Saving money: A new filter reduces costs by tightening up your energy bills, limiting damage and minimizing the risk of premature replacement costs.

A Step-by-Step Guide to Cleaning Your AC Filter

Apply these instructions every one to three months to get all the advantages of a new air filter:

Prepare: As the first step, turn off the AC unit to prevent electrical damage. Then, find your AC filter. It is usually in the return air duct, in the air handler cabinet or inside of the unit itself.

Remove the filter: Gently take out the filter from the compartment. Examine for holes or tears. If the filter is visibly damaged, go ahead and replace it.

Vacuum the filter: Get the brush attachment on your vacuum cleaner to get rid of dirt, hair, fibers and other particles.

Wash the filter: Take the filter outside and spray it down with a garden hose. For a deeper clean, use a mild detergent.

Dry the filter: Place the filter out to dry completely before placing it back. Before that happens, don’t run your air conditioner or you risk getting more dust particles right back into the system.

It’s necessary to note that disposable filters cannot be washed. They need to be swapped out once they become clogged with dust. The replacement filter should be the appropriate size to ensure compatibility with your AC unit.

Additional Components of an AC Unit to Clean

Along with the filter, additional AC components need routine maintenance for optimal performance and longevity. Call an HVAC technician for help servicing the following:

  • The evaporator coils within the indoor unit extract heat from the air. Over time, these coils accumulate a lot of dust, which restricts heat transfer efficiency. Professionals apply a special coil cleaner to clear away dust and grime.
  • The condenser coils found in the outdoor unit get rid of heat absorbed from your home. These coils are left out in the worst weather and can get dirty quickly. While you can lightly clean off dirt, leaves and other debris by grabbing a garden hose, leave more thorough seasonal cleanings to a professional.
  • The fan blades in your AC unit will also accumulate dust and dirt. An HVAC contractor will examine the fan as part of their yearly tune-up, cleaning and tightening the blades as needed to restore normal performance.
  • The condensate drain line in your AC system can become clogged up with algae, mold and debris. If this happens, call a certified maintenance specialist to restore the drain line using a strong cleaning solution or algaecide treatment.
